Working to Energize Uganda’s Future

After he had earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in petroleum engineering at the University of Oklahoma, Raymos Kimanzi ’17 (Uganda, Waterford Kamhlaba UWC) felt torn. He wanted to build more experience in the U.S.’s well-developed oil and gas industry—but he also longed to be back home.
He decided home was where he should be.
“Uganda had discovered oil and gas resources,” Raymos writes, “and there was a plan to invest in the development of those resources for the benefit of the country’s economy. I wanted to be part of this progressive plan.” He now works in Uganda for the multinational firm TotalEnergies EP.
In his country, Raymos writes, “the energy industry is dynamic and ever-changing with a shift to renewable energy, which will be the focus over the next decade. TotalEnergies invests as well in renewable energy, including solar and hydro power in Uganda. I plan to slowly shift into renewable energy research over the next few years with the company.”
“Everyone who knows Raymos knows how much joy he brings to others,” notes Craig Hayes, the University of Oklahoma’s liaison to the Davis UWC Scholars Program. “He approaches every challenge with a smile.”
